Steven Edmond Shearer

Steven Edmond Shearer, 82, formerly of Pleasant Grove, AL, passed away at his home in Florence, AL, on September 8, 2026, after a weekend surrounded by his family.

Steve was born on April 22, 1944, to Mark and Bessie Mae Shearer.

Steve grew up in Pleasant Grove, where he attended elementary school and junior high school. He graduated from Hueytown High School in 1962. Steve attended Wheeler Business College in Birmingham, where he met the former Barbara Alene Haynes of Blountsville. They were married on May 1, 1964.

Steve worked as a salesman for most of his career, first in insurance, then in office supplies. After retiring from sales, he worked as a courier and in the Jefferson County School system at Pleasant Grove Elementary.

Steve believed the gospel of Jesus Christ in his early teen years and was a member of First Baptist Church, Pleasant Grove. He was a Training Union director at First Baptist, PG. He was also active in Sunday School and faithfully attended worship as long as his health permitted.

Steve enjoyed fishing, especially at their place near Miller’s Ferry, visiting with close friends, and spending time with family.

Steve and Barbara moved to Florence in January 2024 to be near his daughter and family.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Bessie Mae Shearer, his sister, Alice Faye Gann, and a sibling, who died at birth.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Shearer, daughter, Kelly Underwood (Chris), son, Scott Shearer (Kristi), granddaughters, Madison Turner (Noah), Christina Underwood and Katie Beth Underwood, grandson, Steven Shearer, and great-grandchildren, Hadley Turner and Harrison Turner.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to SouthernCare New Beacon Hospice for Steve’s care during the past few months. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

There will be a visitation on Thursday evening, September 10, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room at Highland Baptist Church in Florence. There will also be a visitation at First Baptist Church Pleasant Grove at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, with a memorial service following at 2:30 p.m.
