Samuel Thomas “Tom” Pope, 87, of Hoover, Alabama passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026. He was born on August 10, 1938 in Ariton, Alabama.

Tom worked at U.S. Steel in Fairfield, AL for 45 years. While living in the Birmingham area, he was actively involved in the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), serving as the president of NAMI Birmingham for many years. He was also a member of Concord Highlands Baptist Church and later, Garywood Assembly of God. Following his retirement, he and his wife moved to Smith Lake where they lived for twenty-three years before moving to Hoover, Alabama. While living at the lake, Tom enjoyed working in the yard, boating, eating homemade ice cream, and making countless memories with his family and friends. He was also a member of Daystar Church where he served in a ministry welcoming new members to the church. Tom was a generous, hardworking man who was deeply devoted to his family and faith.

Tom is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Sue Sandlin Pope; two children, Michael T. Pope (Kathy), and Jeffrey T. Pope (Stephanie); six grandchildren, Stephanie Allums (Casey), Carrie Tyson, Bryan Pope (Jennifer), Conner Pope, Ashley Pope, and Ryan Pope; twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Zacheriah Pope and Ollie Mae Jacobs Pope; sister, Mary Ellen Mildrum; son, Mitchell Gregory Pope; and granddaughter, Katlyn Taylor Pope.

Visitation will be held Monday May 11, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of life service at 2:00 p.m. at the Patterson-Forest Grove Funeral Home, 1498 5th Avenue, Pleasant Grove, AL 35127. A brief graveside service will be held at Forest Grove Memorial Gardens 1498 5th Avenue, Pleasant Grove, AL 35127 immediately following the celebration of life service.
