Roy James Roberts, affectionately known as “Jackson,” of Hueytown, went home to be with the Lord on July 18, 2019 at the age of 81.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Reba Ann Roberts; daughters, Kelley (Jonathan) Perry and Terri (Sam) Smith; his “spiritually adopted” children, Kaye Lovett and Tammy & Jeff Gay; grandchildren, Kimberly Ann, John and Maria Perry; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Jackson was a former member of Garywood Assembly of God and was currently attending Brooklane Baptist Church. He honored our country by serving in the navy aboard the USS Platte
(AO-24). After active duty, he served many years in the Navy Reserve. Jackson was a hard-working man who was a long-time employee of the Bessemer Street Department. He also worked as an independent contractor for The Birmingham News and received recognition over the years for the excellent service he provided. He was a selfless man who loved and served the Lord by discreet acts of kindness and generosity. He took pride in his “beloved” John Deere, and used it to bless his neighbors. His amazing, quick wit will be fondly remembered by so many, including the Affinity Hospice caregivers. Not only was he blessed by them, but in their words he was a blessing to them!
Visitation will be Thursday, July 25 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the Patterson Forest Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Friday, July 26 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove First Baptist Church cemetery, 9161 Camp Oliver Road in Bessemer. Rev. Keith Ellis, Rev. Fritz Harter and Rev. John Loper will officiate.
