James Douglas Archer, Jr., known to family and friends as Jamie, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 18th, 2026, at his home in Birmingham, Alabama, after a long battle with dementia. Jamie was born in Birmingham, Alabama on March 9th, 1957. During his childhood, Jamie attended several schools around North Alabama as his family followed his father, a Methodist minister, to several churches across the state. In 1975, Jamie graduated from Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City. Following high school, Jamie attended Birmingham Southern College where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order and graduated with a degree in physics. He worked at the Jefferson County Department of Health as a Health Physicist for over a quarter of a century. While at Birmingham Southern, Jamie met his future wife, Naomi, and they were married on August 30, 1986. Jamie was preceded in death by his parents Barbara and Douglas Archer. 

He is survived by his wife, Naomi Hilton Archer, and his children Elisabeth Archer and Jay Archer. He is also survived by his brother Scott Archer (Miriam), and nieces and nephews Andrew, Katie, Anna Taylor, Marlow, Abigail, Eleanor and EJ. Jamie was cremated and his ashes will be sprinkled at a later date. 

memorial service will be held at 2:00 on Sunday, March 1st, at the chapel of Highlands United Methodist Church, 1045 20th Street, South, Birmingham, Alabama 35209 and the family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Alabama Honduran Medical and Educational Network.
