Dennis Raymond Smith “Ray” passed away on August 23, 2026, at Compassus Hospice in Alabaster, Alabama, following a long illness. He was born on November 14, 1947, in Sylacauga, Alabama. Throughout his 78 years, Dennis was known for his unwavering dedication to family, enduring strength, and steady presence within his community.

Throughout his life, Ray touched many with his quiet leadership, steadfast values, and loving devotion. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Judy Collins Smith, whose partnership and support were a cornerstone of his life. He leaves behind two daughters, Trina Lynn Ludvik (Ted) and Rachel Ann Sanchez, each of whom carry forward his legacy of kindness, integrity, and resilience. Ray was immensely proud of his granddaughters—Madison Ann Ludvik, McKenzie Lynn Ludvik, and Emry Camille Sanchez—whose lives he enriched through his guidance and affection.

Ray was the son of the late Richard Hobson Smith, Sr. and Louise Jesselle King, who instilled in him the principles and tenacity that defined his character. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Carol Bergman, and his brother, Richard Hobson Smith, Jr. The memory of his family members who have passed before him remains a lasting testimony to the bonds that shaped him.

Ray was honored to be a member of Kingwood Church for 30 years and also served on the Board of Directors for the Shelby County Miracle League. He and his beloved wife served as missionaries to Ireland which brough immense joy to their lives. Ray faithfully served as chaplain to UAB Medical West and Shelby Baptist Hospitals and also to the Shelby County Correctional Facility. Ray also served for over 20 years as a member of the Gideons International.

Details regarding services to honor and remember Ray's life have been arranged as follows. Visitation will be held on August 27, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Kingwood Church, located at 100 Harvest Way in Alabaster, Alabama. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the same location. Interment will take place at Tabernacle Methodist Church Cemetery, 392 Hurricane Ridge, Lawley, Alabama, on the same day, concluding at 4:30 p.m. Officiating services will Pastor Mark Sims, Bro. Gary Yarbrough and Bro. David Peacock.

Dennis Raymond Smith “Ray” will be remembered for his dedication to his loved ones, his perseverance through adversity, and the genuine warmth he shared with all who knew him. His contributions to his family and community will remain enduring elements of his legacy, providing a source of comfort and inspiration for years to come.
