Betty Jo Ledbetter, age 99 of Homewood, passed away at her residence on October 23, 2026. Born on April 24, 1927 at home in Hueytown, Alabama; Betty Jo lived an extraordinary life, witnessing nearly a century of history and change. From growing up in a coal mining town during the Great Depression, she saw the first Model T Ford and the first man land on the moon. She lived through War II, a time before indoor plumbing, and listened to Babe Ruth’s baseball games on the radio. She carried a lifetime of stories, wisdom, and perspective. She was a living link to another generation, reminding those around her of the value of hard work, perseverance, and gratitude for life’s blessings.
Through the hardships and joys of her many years, Betty remained a constant source of love and strength to her family. Her resilience was matched by her gentle spirit, and her sweet, unmistakable laugh that had a way of brightening even the hardest days. She possessed a special gift for making those she loved feel cared for, welcomed, and at home. Above all, Betty loved Jesus. Her faith was the foundation of her life and a source of comfort and strength through every season. After macular degeneration took her eyesight, her beloved audio Bible could often be heard playing throughout the house, filling the rooms with Scripture and serving as a beautiful reflection of the faith that meant so much to her. She lived with a confidence in God's promises and a love for the Lord that left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know her.
She was also an exceptional cook who showed her love in one of the most special ways she knew how—through food. Holidays were made even more meaningful by her opening her home and gathering her family around the table. Her famous “goodies” were always a welcome treat that she delighted in bringing to share with family and loved ones. One of her greatest joys was her family, especially her granddaughter and great-grandchildren. Being loved by MeeMee was a gift, and watching her love her Emmie and Ellie brought immeasurable happiness to those closest to her. The memories made with her, the stories she told, the laughter she shared, and the love she gave so freely will forever be treasured.
Betty Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Doc Masterson and Rusha Cassandra Howton Knight; her siblings, Inez Earley, Eula Mae Dabbs, Mary Parsons, George Knight, her beloved husband, George Ledbetter; her cherished son, Kenneth Earley; and countless other dear friends and family members whom she held close to her heart.
She leaves behind her beloved granddaughter, Kenda Germain, and her family: Chris, Emmie and Ellie Germain. She is also lovingly remembered by her daughter-in-law, Dora Earley, and her nieces, Mary Jo Funderburg and Louise Najjar, along with other extended family members and loved ones who will forever treasure her memory.
At 99 years old, Betty leaves behind far more than a lifetime of memories. She leaves a legacy of faith that will continue to guide her family, a strength that will continue to inspire them, and a love that will never fade. Though her family will deeply miss her presence, they find comfort in knowing that her earthly journey is complete and that she is now home with the Savior she loved so dearly.
As Scripture reminds us in 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” These words beautifully reflect a life well lived and a faith held steadfastly to the very end.
Betty Jo will forever be remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished family matriarch. To those who loved her, she will always be MeeMee—a precious blessing whose love, laughter, and faith will live on in the hearts of her family for generations to come.
Well done, my good and faithful servant.
