He served in the U. S. Navy from 1951 to 1952 on the Aircraft Carrier USS Leyte during the US European Navy Occupation during the Korean War. He attended the University of Alabama and Auburn University, remaining a Bama fan forever. He married Melba Anthony Travis on August 10, 1956 and they were married for 63 years. He is survived by his wife, Melba, children Mel Travis (Susie), Nan Travis (Medhat Abdalla), Pam Travis, and John Travis (Kellie); grandchildren Donny Skufca (Amber), Charley Travis (Jessica), Jared Travis (Jordan), Jake Travis (Katie), Sean Travis (Moona), and Miss Jordan Travis; 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He worked at Connors Steel for 28 years, quality-testing steel, and later at U.S. Pipe, quality-testing pipe-coatings and later as a supervisor, in Birmingham, AL, retiring in 1999. In recent years he and Melba enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, gardening, and home projects. He and Melba considered themselves fortunate to have travelled the US in their RV following retirement and later enjoyed an Alaskan Cruise, and a Mediterranean Cruise, re-tracing cities he visited while serving in the Navy. He loved to bar-be-que for family, visit with friends from his youth. He instilled strong values and ethics to his family through many quiet and self-less measures; and he left no one wondering where he stood.
